At first, the story of Swampy is known by David Williams, a student who was an intern at the farm Swampy. When a local newspaper reported on problems penguin and the fox, Swampy began to express his ideas. "Swampy said, I have an idea. Penguin-penguin that need a dog maremma on the island," said David. David later wrote about the story of Swampy in an essay for one of his courses at the university. Swampy idea was taken up by the Ministry of Environment Victoria. As a follow up, the Local Government Warrnambool implement this idea and great success. Number of penguins on the island back to about 200an tail.
